I am a new author of gay fiction.
Born in the Niagara Region of Southern Ontario, I was raised in Toronto.
While growing up gay is always a challenge, it was considerably challenging growing up gay in the 1960s and 1970s. Living in a larger urban centre certainly had its advantages back then, but there has been a lot of change in the past 40 years.
Some of my writing takes root in a lot of things I experienced as a gay man growing up in that time, yet some projects focus on the good things, positive changes and important events that have begun to make gay life much better, much richer in the present. None of my work concedes that all is done. There is more to do. But I try to celebrate the rich diversity of Canadian culture, particularly as it relates to the LGBTQ community.
While I hope this blog will help me introduce my work to the world, I also hope to have it give back, enlighten and entertain. I may review some books or movies (I love stories) and I may offer some recommendations. While my writing is focused on a genre or niche, my reading and viewing tastes are not. You might be surprised what I decide to read, watch and share.
I also want to conduct a bit of a social experiment. I am working on my first novel. A for real one, not another attempt. There have been three or four failures (all authors have them) but I’m confident the current work in progress will be a success. I won’t say it will be a best seller, but I’m sure it is something that many people will enjoy. Oops. A little sidetracked here. Back to the social experiment.
It has often been said that the work of a writer is not easy. Many people who read – any medium – might think the writer just sat at a keyboard and the words flowed from brain to fingers to keyboard and the job was done. But I think the savvy reader knows better and can tell that a lot of effort has gone into a good story. So I thought it might be interesting to blog as I follow my muse, sharing the ups, downs, ins, outs, triumphs and trials of getting the story written. Maybe a few previews along the way. An opportunity for you, a prospective reader, to share in the behind-the-scenes of a book, like the bonus features on a movie disc. The posts may not be regular; some posts may be short; hopefully none will be too long, but hopefully all will bring an interesting and entertaining look at what happens at and near the keyboard.
I hope you will come to the party.
